ABOUT OTHERSIDE
OTHERSIDE is a queer-led literary magazine that publishes speculative fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and art by 2SLGBTQIA+ creators. Inspired by José Esteban Muñoz’s definition of queerness as “an insistence on potentiality or concrete possibility for another world,” we reject the present. Instead, we dream of a future we call the otherside: a future defined by possibility, a future in which marginalized authors and artists are no longer confined to the margins. We believe that queer stories by queer authors matter, now more than ever.
We publish quarterly issues in March, June, September, and December. Each issue contains at least 16,000 words of original fiction and poetry plus original art, reprints, and nonfiction, all by authors and artists who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. We believe in making literature accessible, and each issue is freely available online. (Subscribers get early access.) The best way to subscribe right now is via Patreon. Paid patrons receive issues early; free patrons receive a newsletter letting you know when issues are available online. You can also stay in touch with us on social media platforms like Bluesky and Instagram to make sure you never miss an issue.
So, as a reader, what can you expect? We don’t only publish stories about queer characters, though we do have a fondness for queer subjects and themes. Our editorial team loves all kinds of speculative fiction, and we publish everything from dreamy secondary-world fantasy to gritty cyberpunk stories, everything from experimental literary pieces to classic adventure narratives. We love formal poetry—and we love free verse. Sometimes we don’t know what we love until it shows up in our submissions pool. We’re especially interested in offering a home to stories that might be “too queer” or “too unrelatable” to find a home elsewhere. Whatever your tastes, we hope you’ll find something you love in every issue.
OTHERSIDE is published by Hybris Press, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to sharing and promoting queer art. In an increasingly hostile world, Hybris Press and OTHERSIDE only exist thanks to your support, including subscriptions and tax-deductible donations. Thank you for reading, following along, and telling your friends about the work we publish. We couldn’t do this without you.
